Qualifications

  • What we need is someone who is simply excellent with their hands: fast, precise, and able to read a plan and build exactly what it says without someone standing over you
  • 3-8+ years of hands-on residential construction experience
  • Skilled tradesperson with strong framing and finish carpentry ability
  • Expert at reading and working from architectural and structural plans
  • Expert with the hand and power tools used in framing, layout, and finish work
  • Solid understanding of basic building code as it applies to single-family residential
  • Expert at recognizing a developing construction or installation issue before it’s built in, and solving it on the spot — this comes from real field experience, not a checklist

Responsibilities

  • HOWMZ is hiring a Skilled Carpenter to work in tools on our residential builds
  • You take direction from the Site Foreman and execute framing, layout, and finish work to spec, at a high level of craft, day in and day out
  • HOWMZ builds from the ground up with our own crews and uses very few subcontractors, so our carpenters carry more of the build in-house — from framing through finish — than you’d see on a typical sub-heavy job site
  • HOWMZ builds with light-gauge steel framing rather than stick-built lumber, so comfort with cold-formed steel-stud systems is a major plus
  • If you take pride in clean layout, tight tolerances, and work that passes inspection the first time, this is the job
  • Framing & Layout
  • Install steel-stud walls, blocking, headers, and framing per plan
  • Run layout from plans and existing reference points accurately
  • Set windows, hang doors, and install rough carpentry to spec
  • Finish & General Carpentry
  • Perform finish carpentry: trim, casing, cabinetry install, and detail work
  • Execute punch list items and rework flagged by the Foreman or Superintendent
  • Build or assist with temporary site infrastructure (protection, scaffolding, jigs) as directed
  • Read and interpret architectural, structural, and site plans to execute assigned tasks
  • Spot potential issues before they become problems — a bad connection, a framing conflict, a detail that won’t work as drawn — and solve it in your own work before it costs time or gets flagged
  • Flag anything outside your own scope (drawing conflicts, missing dimensions, cross-trade discrepancies) to the Foreman
  • Hold your own work to HOWMZ spec and finish standards; fix it before it’s called out
  • Handle and stage materials for your task area; report shortages or damaged material
  • Keep your work area and tools organized and safe
  • Follow all site safety requirements: PPE, fall protection, housekeeping, hazard reporting
  • Take direction from the Site Foreman and execute without needing to be re-briefed
  • Communicate progress, blockers, or quality issues promptly
  • No direct reports, no crew supervision, no trade coordination responsibilities
  • Reads plans accurately and builds exactly what’s on the page

Job description

About the Role

HOWMZ is hiring a Skilled Carpenter to work in tools on our residential builds. You take direction from the Site Foreman and execute framing, layout, and finish work to spec, at a high level of craft, day in and day out. What we need is someone who is simply excellent with their hands: fast, precise, and able to read a plan and build exactly what it says without someone standing over you.

HOWMZ builds from the ground up with our own crews and uses very few subcontractors, so our carpenters carry more of the build in-house — from framing through finish — than you’d see on a typical sub-heavy job site. HOWMZ builds with light-gauge steel framing rather than stick-built lumber, so comfort with cold-formed steel-stud systems is a major plus. If you take pride in clean layout, tight tolerances, and work that passes inspection the first time, this is the job.

Key Responsibilities

Framing & Layout
• Install steel-stud walls, blocking, headers, and framing per plan
• Run layout from plans and existing reference points accurately
• Set windows, hang doors, and install rough carpentry to spec

Finish & General Carpentry
• Perform finish carpentry: trim, casing, cabinetry install, and detail work
• Execute punch list items and rework flagged by the Foreman or Superintendent
• Build or assist with temporary site infrastructure (protection, scaffolding, jigs) as directed

Plans & Quality
• Read and interpret architectural, structural, and site plans to execute assigned tasks
• Spot potential issues before they become problems — a bad connection, a framing conflict, a detail that won’t work as drawn — and solve it in your own work before it costs time or gets flagged
• Flag anything outside your own scope (drawing conflicts, missing dimensions, cross-trade discrepancies) to the Foreman
• Hold your own work to HOWMZ spec and finish standards; fix it before it’s called out

Materials & Site
• Handle and stage materials for your task area; report shortages or damaged material
• Keep your work area and tools organized and safe
• Follow all site safety requirements: PPE, fall protection, housekeeping, hazard reporting

Communication
• Take direction from the Site Foreman and execute without needing to be re-briefed
• Communicate progress, blockers, or quality issues promptly
• No direct reports, no crew supervision, no trade coordination responsibilities

Required Qualifications
• 3-8+ years of hands-on residential construction experience
• Skilled tradesperson with strong framing and finish carpentry ability
• Expert at reading and working from architectural and structural plans

• Able to work independently without supervision once given direction
• Valid driver license and reliable transportation
• First Aid / CPR certified, or willing to obtain within 30 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications
• Hands-on light-gauge (cold-formed) steel-stud framing experience — strongly preferred, as HOWMZ builds are steel-framed rather than stick-built
• Cold-formed / light-gauge steel framing training or manufacturer certification
• Current Fall Protection, WHMIS, scaffold safety, or confined-space tickets
• Custom or high-spec residential experience
• Comfort with digital site tools (punch list apps, plan viewers)

Who You Are
